Two Sisters on the Terrace
£9.00 – £49.00Artist – Pierre Auguste Renoir
Description
painted this delightful homage to springtime, youth, and beauty on the terrace of the Fournaise family’s restaurant on the Seine River at Chatou—where, six years before, he had made “Lunch at the Restaurant Fournaise,” also in the Art Institute collection. The painting was already under way by April 19, 1881, when, at lunch in Chatou with the American painter James McNeill Whistler, Renoir spoke of postponing a planned trip to London: “The weather is fine and I have my models; that’s my only excuse.” The young woman in this painting wears the blue flannel dress favoured by lady boaters at the time. She and the girl at her side were not actually related. The art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel invented the title “Two Sisters” when he bought the painting from Renoir in July 1881.

The Veteran in a New Field
£9.00 – £49.00Description
Painted soon after General Robert E. Lee’s surrender on April 9, 1865, and President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination five days later, Homer’s canvas depicts an emblematic farmer, revealed to be a Union veteran as well by his discarded jacket and canteen at the lower right. His old-fashioned scythe evokes the Grim Reaper, recalling the war’s harvest of death and expressing grief at Lincoln’s murder. A redemptive feature is the bountiful wheat—a northern crop—which could connote the Union’s victory. Referring to death and life, Homer’s iconic composition offers a powerful meditation on America’s sacrifices and its potential for recovery.

Venus and the Lute Player
£9.00 – £49.00Description
Titian and his workshop painted the theme of Venus and a musician in multiple versions during the latter part of his career. Venus’s contours would be transferred to a new canvas and laid in by the workshop, varying the composition. In this majestic example, Titian fully painted the landscape as well as attended to the flesh tones of Venus, but other parts, such as the viol, remained unfinished. These paintings celebrate the coming together of love and music, but they may also allude to contemporary debates concerning “seeing” versus “hearing” as the primary means for perceiving beauty.

Rubens made a number of modifications in the course of work on the painting, intensifying the friar’s impetuous movement and revising the Virgin’s pose from a formal profile to a casual expansiveness.
